LOVE IS NEITHER SHORT NOR LONG

WHAT IS ‘LIGHT THE SHADOWS’?

Shadows are hard times, they can be felt in times of darkness and grief… we want to help cast some light on these shadows. The Project offers compassion photography to families, we hope that when we come to take photos of you and your loved one(s) it is something that is part of the healing process and that you can look back on. We hope that these photos are a legacy that you can hold on to and cherish forever.

“THE BEST THING ABOUT A PICTURE IS THAT IT NEVER CHANGES, EVEN WHEN THE PEOPLE IN IT DO.”
— ANDY WARHOL

APPLY FOR A SESSION

We believe that every family dealing with the tragedy of critical illness should have family, baby or child photos. If you, your child or another member in your immediate family is suffering because of a terminal illness your family is eligible for a donated (no cost to you) family session.

A terminal diagnosis for you, your child or spouse changes every aspect of your life. We may not understand the emotions and hardships you may be feeling as you fight this battle together, but we can help you preserve this precious time together. We want you to have photos to cherish forever and for the process to be simple and a blessing.

INTERESTED IN JOINING OUR TEAM?

There’s no greater way to bless someone than with your talents. Are you interested in becoming a part of our team? Maybe you’re not a photographer but you still want to help! Here are a few ways you can help us!

  • Apply to be a photographer and start meeting with amazing families and help them treasure these moments.
  • Social media, spread the word! Share our story, what we’re doing and help us gain support!
  • Do you know people who would like to be a part of something? Is there some way that they can give, be that knit hats for new parents to take home, or a professional connection as a vendor partner.

ABOUT US

Rarely do we take photos for people feeling the weight of the value of them before we even click the shutter on my camera. Of course there’s value behind the family photos you do for Christmas cards, your wedding photos and the day to day ones of your kids being goofs.

However, the value of a photo of your baby who passed away, or a loved one with a terminal illness who will soon leave this earth is priceless.

That value weighs heavy on photographer as they hit the elevator button to step onto the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) floor. As time goes so does our memories. Smells fade, that laughter you remember slowly disappears from your memory, or how tiny they were when they were born….

HOW WE HELP

These pictures that have captured their child mean so much to families. They treasure these images of their child’s hands, feet and face. The photographs keep their child as an ever-present part of the family, even after they have passed.

The hospitals offer this service to families before they deliver, in some cases, and they are delighted that their unborn child is already being acknowledged. Light the Shadows is then available to come to the hospital to take pictures once a baby is delivered.

Some families have a very short time with their baby, so making these memories in those precious moments is crucial. Sometimes a families baby is born passed, but photographs are still taken with the family. All of these photos provide a lifetime of essential memories and positively impact the family’s bereavement, and help their healing.
